Clothing: Please ensure you are dressed for the weather in warm comfortable clothing and wearing soft soled non marking footwear (no black soled running shoes please)

What to bring: A packed lunch is advisable along with bottled water and any snacks you wish to bring.

Course Outline

Theory – on board

  • Introduction – Explanation of the training syllabus and modules
  • Safety Briefing – Safety precautions – Introduction to use and location of life jackets, flares, life raft, first aid kit, fire extinguishers, safety harnesses
  • Location and use of: heads, bilge pumps, water pumps (manual and presurised), cooker and propane gas, battery selector switch, cabin lights, general housekeeping rules
  • Suitable clothing/footwear, effects of heat and cold
  • Seasickness
  • Dos and don’ts aboard a yacht
  • Passage Planning – Briefing about passage planning, to include an overview of charts, effect of tides/currents, weather forecasts, courses, safe passage
  • Look out and things to watch for
  • Keeping track of progress


  • Rope Work – Coiling a line, securing to a cleat
  • Tie the following knots – round turn and two half hitches, clove hitch, figure of eight stopper knot
  • Safe use of winches
  • Short Passage – Sail – Handling sails and halyards, hoisting and lowering sails. Winches, boom and associated dangers.
  • Understands the commands for tacking and gybing
  • Briefing on slipping and coming alongside, Anchor, MOB procedures
  • Securing for sea, lookout duties, steering and general duties

Important Information

Location: Sydney By Sail are based on the Festival Pontoon in front of the Maritime Museum, next to Pyrmont Bridge in Darling Harbour.
Parking: If you require parking the closest car park can be found on Murray Street under the Novotel. Validate your parking ticket inside the Museum to receive a discounted rate.
Cancellation Fee: Inside 30 day’s loss of all monies paid/Prior to 30 days – no charge.
Prices: Public Holiday surcharges apply. Prices are subject to change without notice.
Bad weather: SBS determines suitability of conditions. Postponement fees apply. No rain checks.
Refunds: Are not available. Any monies paid, less postponement / cancellation fees have been applied, is held as a credit towards a future booking or other activities conducted by Sydney By Sail (excluding skippers and catering fees).
Footwear: Only soft-soled, non-marking shoes will be permitted on the vessel.
