Inshore Bareboat Charter Course

Are you planning to bareboat charter a yacht in an area like the Whitsundays or Sydney harbour? This is the course for you! 

The Inshore Bareboat Charter Course is a one-day course designed to prepare you for skippering a sailing vessel in sheltered waters during daylight hours. 

Prerequisites: Previous experience / knowledge of sailing and sailing yachts; preferably at Crew level / certification. 

Course Outline & Important Information

  • This course costs $380 per person and includes:

    • Total of seven hours of professional training onboard a Sydney By Sail yacht
    • Includes all safety gear, fuel and instruction
    • Gift Vouchers available
  • There is around 2 hours of theory on this course:

    • Operating procedures
    • Safety inspection and equipment
    • Location and layout
    • Seacock’s and thru-hull fittings electrical systems – switches and breakers
    • Bilge systems – pumps and filters
    • Instruments – log and transducer, basic engineering – engine parts & spares
    • Trouble shooting
    • Water leaks
    • Electrical failure – pumps, lights, windlass
    • Engine failure – over heating, fuel shortage, toilet blockage
    • Stove in-operable
    • Radio operation
    • Emergency procedures
  • There is around 4 hours of practical on-water action on this course

    • Sailing technique
    • Tips on sail configuration
    • Reefing
    • Sailing in heavy seas
    • Comfortable sailing
    • Helming techniques & short handed sailing
    • Trouble shooting & gear failure
    • Anchoring technique
    • Passage planning provisioning the yacht
    • Using the chart & equipment
    • Dead reckoning
    • Best itineraries – Sydney Harbour
    • Best itineraries – Whitsundays 
    • Best anchorages – Sydney Harbour
    • Best anchorages – Whitsundays
  • If you would like to book this course as a Private Lesson, we can do so on ANY date available to us for a price of $1400. You could have 1-4 people onboard this course and the instructor can teach to various levels and get the group working together. This is the best preparation for a bareboat charter in sheltered waters. 

  • It is important to be prepared for a day of yachting on Sydney Harbour. It is wise to bring the following: 

    • Sun safety gear
    • Warm jacket/jumper 
    • Wet weather gear (if required)
    • Water Bottle
    • Lunch (or be prepared to visit one of the eateries nearby)
    • Notepad and pen
    • Non marking shoes (avoid black soled shoes) 
    • A sense of fun and adventure 
  • This course is a part of both of our Sail Training packages. Why not consider one of the packages to enjoy economical and operational advantages? We have two packages you could consider:

    • International Crew Package which prepares you for bareboat chartering domestically in sheltered waters, such as the Whitsundays or Sydney harbour
    • International Skipper Package: providing internationally recognised certification allowing you to bareboat charter yachts anywhere in the world, such as the Mediterranean or Caribbean. 
  • COST: $380pp for a total of seven hours training on a Sydney By Sail yacht

  • PRIVATE LESSON: available on ANY date available for a total price of $1400. You could have 1-4 people onboard this course and the instructor can teach to various levels for best preparation of a bareboat charter in sheltered waters.
