Introduction to Sailing – Sailing Courses to Prepare for Bareboat Charter

Take to the waters of beautiful Sydney Harbour and learn all the fundamental principles of sailing.

The Introduction to Yachting course is a fantastic way to begin your yachting journey. Learn how to prepare a yacht for sailing, understand the wind & weather, practice manoeuvring under sail or motor, learn the rules of the road, knots and basic navigation.

The course is run over two days (mainly weekends) from 10am to 4pm. Total twelve hours on-water time prioritising participants’ time on the helm onboard one of our luxury sailing yachts.

The goal of this course is to make you fall in love with sailing!

Course Outline & Important Information

  • There is around 60 minutes of theory each day

    • Safety Briefing: use of life jackets, flares, life raft, first aid kit, fire extinguishers, safety harnesses, heads, bilge pumps, water pumps (manual and pressurised), cooker and propane gas, battery selector switch, cabin lights, general housekeeping rules; Suitable clothing/footwear, effects of heat and cold; Seasickness; Dos and Don’ts aboard a yacht
    • Trip Planning: briefing about passage planning, to include chartwork, effect of tides/currents, weather forecasts, courses, safe passage and keeping track of progress
  • There is around 5 hours of practical on-water action each day

    • Rope Work
    • Collision Regulations
    • Harbour Sail: Slipping and coming alongside; handling sails and halyards, hoisting and lowering sails; winches, boom and associated dangers, understands the commands for tacking and gybing; anchor, MOB; securing for sea, lookout duties, steering and general duties.
  • This course costs $595 per person and  includes:

    • Total twelve hours on-water time, including instruction aboard a Sydney By Sail yacht
    • Includes all safety gear, fuel and instruction
    • Gift Vouchers available
  • It is important to be prepared for a day of yachting on Sydney Harbour. It is wise to bring the following: 

    • Sun safety gear
    • Warm jacket/jumper 
    • Wet weather gear (if required)
    • Water Bottle
    • Lunch (or be prepared to visit one of the eateries nearby)
    • Notepad and pen
    • Non marking shoes (avoid black soled shoes) 
    • A sense of fun and adventure 
  • Upon completion of the Introduction to Yachting course, why not upgrade to one of our Sail Training packages, allowing you to be your own skipper domestically or internationally.  We have two packages you could consider:

    • International Crew Package which prepares you for bareboat chartering domestically in sheltered waters, such as the Whitsundays or Sydney harbour
    • International Skipper Package: providing internationally recognised certification allowing you to bareboat charter yachts anywhere in the world, such as the Mediterranean or Caribbean. 
  • COST: $595 per person, including:

    • Total twelve hours on-water time, including instruction aboard a Sydney By Sail yacht
