Night Sail
The Night Sail course is great practical experience for those who want to focus on sailing in the dark and the different skills needed for this. It’s recommended to have previous sailing experience, preferably at Crew level.
The Night Sail is one of the modules required to undertake if you wish to earn the International Crew Certificate.
The course runs from 530pm – 9pm in Winter or 630pm – 10pm in Summer.
Course Outline & Important Information

There is around 30 minutes of theory on this course
- Preparing the yacht to navigate at night: What are the correct lights to display under power, sail or at anchor?
- Passage Planning at night: how to use paper or electronic charts to navigate safely at night
- Do’s and Don’ts at night: what are the simple do’s and don’ts when navigating at night? How can I ensure both my yacht and crew remain safe during the passage?

There is around 3 hour of practical Night Sailing in this course
- Navigating at Night: Collision regulations for boats, buoys. marks and other rules and regulations governing navigation once the sun has set
- Transits, sector lights and safe channel marks: How to discern the difference and use these navigational tools to your advantage
- Sydney harbour special considerations: It can be pretty tough to navigate at night at the best of times, but when you have a major city in the backdrop things get interesting! How can you know the difference between the lights of a restaurant or the lights of a safe water mark? Find out on this course!

This course costs $210 per person and includes:
- Three and a half hours of Night Sail tuition onboard a luxury Sydney by Sail Yacht
- All safety equipment and tools required to navigate safely at night

It is important to be prepared for a night of yachting on Sydney Harbour. It is wise to bring the following:
- Warm jacket & jumper
- Warm jacket & jumper
- (if you didn’t get it the first few times) Warm jacket & jumper
- Wet weather gear (if required)
- Water Bottle
- Snacks
- Notepad and pen
- Non marking shoes (avoid black soled shoes)
- A sense of fun and adventure

This course is a part of both of our Sail Training packages. Why not consider one of the packages to enjoy economical and operational advantages? We have two packages you could consider:
- International Crew Package which prepares you for bareboat chartering domestically in sheltered waters, such as the Whitsundays or Sydney harbour
- International Skipper Package: providing internationally recognised certification allowing you to bareboat charter yachts anywhere in the world, such as the Mediterranean or Caribbean.
